I captured the visit through Instagram. My phone camera takes better pictures than my point and shoot and I am not ashamed to be a part of the amateur photography bandwagon. Anyway, I will share a few pictures with you (mostly of food) and talk about some of the amazing things I saw and ATE!

I got in late Friday night thanks to a delay (I actually ended up buying a new ticket through a different airline, and my bag went to the wrong airport--not off to a great start)! My cousin, her boyfriend, and I hit up the local drag (read: amazing) bar Kit Kat Lounge & Supper Club. The food was spectacular. I had grilled cheese made with brie and a tomato reduction with basil oil and the Zsa Zsa Gabor italian sausage stuffed ravioli with a spicy parmesan cream sauce. The food was fantastic and the entertainment unforgettable. I have a couple pictures on my camera that I can add to the post later.

Saturday was spent walking around downtown Chicago doing all the touristy things and we ended up at the top of the Hancock Building (the 96th floor) for a cocktail.

For dinner we went to Hubbard Inn, a tavern style restaurant and bar where I drank delicious cocktails such as the Ginger Flip (absolut citron, domaine de canton, egg white, aperol, egg white, lemon juice), the English Daisy (patron reposado, lime juice, english lavender elixir), and my personal favorite, the Hepburn (effen cucmber, st. germain, lemon juice). We snacked on goat cheese stuffed, bacon wrapped dates and all shared small dishes including a three-cheese flatbread, rabbit stew, ahi tuna, and truffle ravioli. The food and drinks were phenomenal and the atmosphere was quite enjoyable.

Ginger Flip

The next morning we went to brunch at Angelina Ristorante, a place close to my cousin's apartment in Boystown. For $21 we got a bottomless mimosa brunch with about 10 different plate choices. I had the classic scrambled eggs, bacon, and home fries. I was nursing a small hangover (after Hubbard Inn, we went to karaoke and I needed a little liquid courage), so I couldn't handle the more rich breakfast dishes, however I would love to try the Eggs Benedict with spinach one day!

We headed downtown to get on the Architectural Boat tour. The boat went along the north and south branches of the Chicago River and I learned some great history of the city and it's architecture.

After the tour, we went to BIN 36, a wine and cheese bar where I had some of the best cheese I have ever tasted! I got a wine flight (tastes of 2 whites and 2 reds--they had many options) and we shared two cheese flights, a cheddar flight, and a flight of cheeses from several different animals. Some memorable options were a 10-year Wisconsin cheddar and a buffalo mozzarella, as well as one that I can't remember the name of, however it was horseradish-y and earthy and I did not enjoy it at all! Hopefully I can find out the name so I can avoid it in the future.

Cheese Flights

That night, we went to Gino's East of Chicago for some deep dish pizza. We had the classic sausage patty pizza and it was delicious. I could only eat one piece (that stuff is thick!), but it was awesome. I was also able to enjoy a Fat Tire beer, something I can't get in Florida. We wanted to head to Pops for Champagne for an after dinner cocktail, however, I was feeling on the heavy side (hmmm...wonder why) and didn't know if I could be rolled over to the bar. Instead we headed home and watched a movie. Next time I am in town, we will definitely be hitting it up, as well as a few of the restaurants from Top Chef contestants!

Monday was mostly a recovery day. We spent some time walking along Lake Michigan and walked over to Phoebe's for cupcakes. I got a Pancakes and Bacon Cupcake while my cousin opted for the Salted Caramel (that was my second choice, but I DO NOT turn down bacon).
I spent about 4 hours on a layover in Nashville on the way home (I was pretty angry at the time, but Southwest gave everyone a $100 voucher for the inconvenience, which partly made up for the trouble) and finally plopped into bed at about 2 am Monday night.

Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154047836301108944noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1811545669330383269.post-53523201875172552752012-04-12T09:05:00.000-04:002012-04-12T09:05:41.149-04:00Back to BasicsYesterday I finally tried a Barre Pilates class. The most popular brand of this workout routine seems to be PureBarre, but there is not a PureBarre studio in my area. I scoured the internet looking for something similar close to home and came up empty. Thankfully, my friend Virginia (who graciously tried Bikram Yoga with me) knew of a studio about 3 miles from my house.

I signed up for "Barre Formation Plus" at Transformation Pilates Studio which is the basic barre class with a little cardio thrown in. My first class was free and the teacher, Alison, was fabulous! She was so welcoming and really had time to work with all of us individually because the class was so small. She even did a lot of the exercises with us (and she is 5 months pregnant with twins, so she is obviously committed)!!

I knew I would enjoy this class because it reminded me of my days as a ballerina, warming up on the bar (well, this was more intense, but the same technique was there). My legs were shaking when I left, partly due to my lack of exercise recently, and feel nice and sore this morning. Sore legs are a sign of a good workout!

I signed up for a month unlimited of barre classes--hopefully to get my butt in gear and my body ready for bikini season! I'm glad this week's exercise experiment turned out better than the last.Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154047836301108944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1811545669330383269.post-67598622032397542692012-03-30T10:14:00.000-04:002012-03-30T10:14:14.036-04:00Hot Yoga is....Hot....I am always open to trying new fitness classes. I have done Step, Body Pump, Zumba, Spinning, and TRX. The only one I stuck with was Step (in college) and TRX (did it for a few months last year).

I have a few Facebook friends always talking about Bikram Yoga at this studio--the practice of yoga in a room heated to 105 degrees. Sounds crazy, right? IT IS.

I really wanted to try it. Yoga has never really been my thing--I am not all Woooosaa and Namaste. I don't shop at lululemon and I don't like granola. Okay...those are stereotypes, but ya know what I'm saying? Anyway, I always like to try something new.

Let's just say, I don't think it is for me. I did all the right things. 1. Hydrate like crazy 24 hours before. 2. Don't drink caffeine before class. 3. Come on a empty stomach. 4. Wear almost no clothing. I almost passed out twice, got super dizzy, and overall, just wasn't having a good time. It obviously takes some getting used to, but I don't think I'll be back for more. The teacher was very nice, accommodating, and helpful, but it's just not for me!

Up next, my friend Virginia (who sweetly went to Bikram with me) and I are going to try Barre Pilates. She has been before and assures me it is a good workout! Can't wait!Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154047836301108944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1811545669330383269.post-77235636401597103322012-03-30T10:05:00.000-04:002012-03-30T10:05:43.998-04:00My First 15KA couple weeks ago, I ran my first 15K (which is about 9.3 miles). This is the longest distance I have ever run in my entire life! The run takes place in Jacksonville, and the weather is a gamble in March. Thankfully, the sky was overcast and it was a tad windy. This was wonderful for the flat parts of the run, but the wind made the two bridges on the course nearly impossible! I didn't practice with bridges, but I managed to complete the race with a personal record! I completed in 1:40:25 which is a pace of 10:46 min/mile. I know this is no race winning pace, but for someone who just started running last year, I am pretty proud of myself!

A friend from work and her husband surprised me right before the last mile of the race with a sign cheering me on. It was a little inside joke from work that really put a smile on my face (actually, it made me cry for a second--a sign of exhaustion!!) and gave me the motivation to finish strong!

Here is the sign:

Maybe a Half Marathon?? :)Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154047836301108944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1811545669330383269.post-10202670936426218832012-03-01T21:34:00.001-05:002012-03-01T21:34:44.086-05:00Holla fo a DollaThis is what happens when you run 7 miles in cheap (but awesomely colorful) Target socks.
I have found a few staples that I don't stray from, but there are some things I am always changing--in search for the perfect fit for my skin.

I wash my face daily with Say Yes to Tomatoes Daily Clarifying Cleanser. I just started using this, but I already love it. It smells great, is 98% natural (fewer harsh chemicals), and makes my skin feel smooth.

I take my makeup off as soon as I get home from work and these are my favorite wipes from Neutrogena. The smell is calming, and the wipes moisturize my face at the same time as they clean it. I also have the Say Yes to Blueberries Makeup Removing Wipes, but haven't used them yet.

Aveeno's Positively Radient Daily Moisturizer is a product I have been using for years. It has SPF 15 (I always wear sunscreen on my face) and is smooth on my skin, which is helpful when applying makeup.

My two favorite products from NARS are the blush in "Orgasm" (quite a name, huh?) and the Pure Matte Lipstick in Carthage. Orgasm is NARS most popular product for a reason. It has the perfect amount of pink, bronze, and sparkle. The Pure Matte Lipstick is long lasting, bright, and an awesome shade of hot pink. It adds a little oomph to my daily makeup!

The best bronzer I have come across is from Hoola from Benefit. It is a matte bronzer (with no shimmer whatsoever), which I really like, because I already use a shimmery blush and I don't want to look like a disco ball at work. I can put it all over my face (this is also good, because I don't let my face get any sun), without looking too fake. If I want a little shimmer (to go out at night) I add a little bit of Bare Minerals bronzer in Trudy.

I used to spend $$$ on designer mascaras, but I always found that drugstore mascara works best for me. I go through it quickly (it gets clumpy after about a month and a half) and this Cover Girl Lash Blast Fusion gives me volume and length. I get the waterproof so it lasts all day. It comes off in a cinch with the Neutrogena wipes.
Things I am still looking to perfect? I use Laura Mercier Oil Free Foundation, but I still find it a bit too oily for my skin. I have also used Makeup Forever (my favorite so far), and Neutrogena. I think I will be going back to MakeUp Forever when I need a new bottle, but suggestions are welcome!Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154047836301108944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1811545669330383269.post-78896701991316074822012-02-28T08:59:00.000-05:002012-02-28T08:59:59.223-05:00Prepping/Procrastinating for the 15KIn a little less than 2 weeks I will be running in Jacksonville's Gate River Run. The 15K(9.3 mi) will be the longest distance I have ever run, and I am super excited, but I also can't seem to get the motivation to keep training! I was supposed to do 7 miles yesterday, I watched Jane Eyre instead. Then I decided I would get up early and go before work. I slept in instead (because I stayed up to late reading The Girl Who Played With Fire).

I think this gloomy weather (I haven't seen the sun since Saturday) is really getting to me. MUST. GO. RUNNING. AFTER. WORK. The hardest part is getting out the front door, and once I'm done, I feel great. If only I could be more like Kate. Hmph.
It's been awhile. I am obviously not very good at this blog thing. Here's giving it another go!

I guess I should start by what is going on in my life currently...

I will be starting Medical School in 6 months, so my life is about to get turned upside down, I'm sure. I will be moving to South Florida, getting a fancy (ok, not really) apartment, and starting a new life all alone. Well, my pomeranian Bella will be there. Does she count? I do talk to her, so I think she does.

I ran 6.2 miles (part of a marathon relay) for the first time in my life last week. Never thought I would say that. I still don't consider myself a runner, but I am starting to enjoy it considerably more than I used to (when I couldn't even run a tenth of a mile without dropping to the floor). I am running a 15K (9.3 mi) in a couple of weeks and I am nervous/excited/what if my legs fall off?? What's next, and half marathon, then maybe a marathon??? WHO AM I?

I've been reading a lot. I starting a 2012 Book Challenge using the Good Reads site. I'm already on Book 7 of 25! I finally read The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and I loved it! It was a slow start, however I really got into after the first 50 pages. I already bought the second book in the series. I also read a lot of YA books because I like to live through others' (fictional) HS experiences since mine were less than exciting. Seriously, I was a nerd.

I am really really really going to try and blog more often. I want to get a better blog design, and start including more pictures, but one thing at a time.Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154047836301108944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1811545669330383269.post-35851157029234166662011-04-12T21:26:00.000-04:002011-04-12T21:29:58.836-04:00Quick UpdateSo, I finally got a second Josette chair from Pier 1 Imports. Unfortunately, since I bought them at different times, they are a little different. The new one is slightly larger (and I'm probably the only one who will ever notice), and slightly brighter. The colors have a tad more punch. I'm hoping that if I accent them differently (one with a pillow, one with a throw/blanket) that it will not be noticeable. And as my mother says, "who likes matchy-matchy anyway?" (Well...I do mother...)

Also, I started reading The Hunger Games (after reading the dog rescue book Oogy in a week or so), and I am already hooked!! Only 1 chapter in and I can't put it down. I think the last book I felt this way about was Water For Elephants.

So this was just a short little update. I am thinking of a couple new topics to bring to the blog. In the meantime, I am going to go read my book in my new chair! <---See what I did there? :)Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154047836301108944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1811545669330383269.post-56264764207005414052011-03-24T21:36:00.000-04:002011-03-24T21:36:56.816-04:00A Splash of ColorSo I currently live in my parents house, which is good (hey, no rent!), but can be frustrating. I want to have my own place so that I can have a creative outlet for all of the crazy ideas bouncing around in my head.

Back in July 2010, I bought a chair for my room at my parents house. I needed something else in the room because it's kind of bare and no longer has a desk (that thing bounced around so many places the past four years that I couldn't even tell you where it is)! This is the chair:

via Pier 1 Imports

I knew instantly that when I did get my own place, this would be the inspiration for the house. The chair has so many colors that I love! Mustard, sky blue, and deep crimson red would be other colors that I could introduce throughout the house.

I was lucky enough to get the first chair on sale. I have been watching the Pier 1 website like a hawk for the past six months waiting for the chair to go on sale again. So far, no luck. A couple weeks ago, I was given a coupon for 20% off of Pier 1, and my mother had just offered to get me a gift for watching the house, dogs, and little brother/third dog while they were out of town. What a perfect coincidence of events!

I ordered the second chair and will be picking in up next week. I can not wait to move into a house/apartment (hopefully sometime in the near future) and use these chairs as my inspiration. I can see them across from a neutral colored couch covered in these pillows:

via Madeline Weinrib Atelier

Ummmm...yeah I was sort of busy last week. Bad excuse I know, considering I already broke my promise. Oops.

Okay...starting TODAY I will blog at least twice a week. :D

Another Major Monday is among us. This week I am dying to get immersed in a good book. I rarely find time to read (even though I love it) because my demanding schedule of cheesy dramas **cough** Pretty Little Liars **cough** and wacky reality shows **ahem** The Bachelor and Bethenny Ever After, do not allow me enough time to read before I go to bed (remember, I go to bed earlier than most 22 year olds).

However in the next week I am going to make it my goal (we'll see how this goes, remember my last goal? Oh yeah...) to start a book. Currently pondering:

The Hunger Games (heard from several people that this is a great read)

via Amazon

But at least I warned you in the beginning! :)

New goal--to blog at least twice a week.

I hate Mondays, so in attempt to make brighten my day, I am going to start a little series called Major Monday where I will feature something that I am currently craving.

To start it off: All white rooms. Completely unrealistic in most homes (especially if you have pets or kids), but there is something about it that makes me want to snuggle up with a cup of coffee and a good book.

She lives in the heart of downtown, close to the beach, and I'm hoping some shopping! I am excited to spend the weekend in Miami, it's warm and I will be able to lay out and get a tan (well okay, probably not a tan, but I'll take anything at this point, I'm beginning to look like Casper). I'm also super excited to go out on the town and be able to get dressed up. Very rarely do I go out in Jacksonville. 1. Everything is so far away and getting a cab is a fortune. 2. I can never stay awake because I normally go to bed at 9 (granny status). And 3. Did I mention granny status? I like Jeopardy and a big glass of red wine in my jammies. Lame and I love it.

On Sunday I participated in the Donna Breast Cancer Marathon. I ran 5 miles in 58 minutes. I am no champion but for me, this is great! I had a wonderful time but I was exhausted! We had to get up at 5:00am to get to the race which started at 7:30am. It was FREEZING. I had to wear shorts though because I wouldn't actually start running until 9:00 when it was warmer. Also, I hate running in pants! I now know that next year I need to bring some throw away sweatpants and a sweatshirt to wear in the morning. Aside from that minor detail, and the fact that the shuttle system was less than perfect, I had a great time.

On Monday it was Valentine's Day. Wahooooo. :) My mom, dad, and brother (and of course the two pups) were my valentines. My brother even went out and bought us chocolate. We had steak, wine, and watched Watson kick serious ass on Jeopardy! Oh, and did I mention that my dad and I have watched every episode of Pretty Little Liars together? He is obsessed and I love that he now asks me every Monday if there is a new episode.

Ta-Ta for now!Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154047836301108944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1811545669330383269.post-4928992613189341592011-02-10T22:02:00.000-05:002011-02-10T22:02:19.510-05:00PotpourriThis whole blogging thing is hard to keep up with. I have so many ideas. I just need to take the time to sit down and write them down! I think I'll make this post a potpourri of topics.

1. The Bachelor-Week 6: We are in Costa Rica. Land of love....and large beetle creatures that make their way into your living room (and probably your bed--how romantic). I have just a few things to note. First, let's all just pretend that it wasn't the producers idea to put Chantal in Brad's white button down. Was anyone else grossed out when she came out and all of a sudden he was like "I'll be riiiighhtt back." Ew. We all know what you're doing Brad. Second, are men really attracted to the violent and catty behavior of which Michelle reeks? I know that she's only on the show for ratings at this point, but even a phenomenal actor like Brad (did you see his blood donations PSAs and action movie? AH-mazzzzze. HA.) shouldn't be able to keep a straight face when she's slapping him around like a rag doll and acting like a selfish lunatic. Last, when Alli let out the blood curdling scream while being attacked by a bug (hilarious), did you notice how Michelle casually wrote it off while Brad looked genuinely concerned (for 2.5 seconds, then he was back under Michelle's creepy spell). Seems to me like Michelle is not bothered by what seemed like someone being murdered which just solidifies my prediction that she has in fact been in a insane asylum at one point in her life.

2. Things I bought recently: Got those Aldo boots from the "STUFF!!" post. In LOVE with them, however they have quite the (5 inch) heel on them. I look like Godzilla, but I am proud to wear such beautiful boots. Also bought a great new purse, necklace, and hat from Urban Outfitters. I got some great nail polish from Ulta, a rainbow sparkly one and a khaki/army green one!

3. This weekend is the Breast Cancer Marathon. I am competing in the Marathon Relay with 4 others. We are each responsible for 5 miles (one person does 6.2). I am excited because this will be the first run that I seriously compete in. I am going to try and run all 5 miles. I have done several 5Ks before, but I never run the entire thing. This will be my first chance to see if I am actually cut out to be a runner! Wish me luck, I'm going to need it!Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154047836301108944noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1811545669330383269.post-59725869490506733362011-01-31T20:11:00.000-05:002011-01-31T20:11:39.939-05:00Wardrobe Staple: StripesThere are a few things that stay constant in my closet. The colors white, black, gray, and blue, and STRIPES! I love wearing stripes. I think horizontal stripes look good on anyone. Basic cotton striped tees can be dressed up or down so they make the perfect transition from day to night. Wear with jeans, flats, and a scarf for a day of lunch and shopping. Or pair with heels, dark jeans, and a leather jacket for a night out on the town.

Here is a little compilation of striped apparel I found:
Though most of the tops I have are no longer available, there is no shortage of striped tees out there! Remember to stick with horizontal striped. Vertical striped look good on no one!Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154047836301108944noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1811545669330383269.post-463711004002756482011-01-25T20:59:00.000-05:002011-01-25T21:00:16.749-05:00STUFF!My weaknesses:
1. Clothes
2. Shoes
3. Purses

Yes, it's all stupid materialistic stuff...AND I LOVE IT. Judge all you want but if I won the lottery, I would probably spend most of the money on those three things. (We all think we would put it in the bank, give it to charity, buy our parents a house because we've been sucking the life and money out of them for the past--in my case--22.5 years, but let's get real. We like STUFF. I LOVE stuff).

So this post is about the stuff I love and I'm happy to write about it.

Last night I watched Pretty Little Liars, so naturally as soon as it was over, I headed to Possessionista's blog about everything we covet in Hollywood. I am in love with this top that Hannah wore. Although I would never spend the money on it, I hope I can find something similar. (Picture found by Possessionista).

I wanted to by a pair of Frye boots. I have heard that they are super comfortable and really worth the money. I want a pair of long lasting boots, but I am hard-pressed to hand over $300. I found this at Aldo for only $50. They look almost identical to the style that I wanted from Frye (Harlow Campus), yet they are a fraction of the price.

And lastly, it is time for me to get a new purse. I am always torn between black and brown (boring I know), but I don't like to constantly switch my stuff from purse to purse to match an outfit (cleaning out my purse is a whole other story), so that's why I tend to keep in neutral. I found this bag (also from Aldo, my go-to handbag store) and it's a little expensive so I'm going to try and find a very similar bag. I have had a cross body bag for a while, but I am ready to go back to a regular shoulder tote.

So, although I am trying (really, I'm trying) to save money, I am going to invest in a new purchase soon. I'll let you know what it is!Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154047836301108944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1811545669330383269.post-74263192900141300372011-01-19T10:46:00.000-05:002011-01-19T10:46:59.746-05:00Workin' on my FitnessI am currently at work, waiting for my experiment to finish. I am bored so I started reading about the exercises I will have to do tonight according to my Jillian Michaels Making the Cut book. On January 3rd, I began working out 4 days a week, and (at least trying) to eat better. I have done pretty well so far, as the workout goes at least. I am now able to run 1.5 miles without stopping, which is something I have never been able to do, because for some reason I have the lung capacity of and 80 year old with emphysema.

When is started the program, I stuck close to the meal plan. However, in the past week or two, I have strayed a bit because I can't afford to spend $150 at the grocery store every week. Dieting is burning a hole in my wallet! I thought I would share with you a couple of the things I have learned from this book--good and bad.

1. EAT BREAKFAST (how many times have you heard someone say that?? It's so true!!), and have a healthy snack between lunch and dinner. This is especially important if you plan to work out before dinner. I have found that I work much harder and have more energy when I have an apple or some crackers and PB around 3:00 and then start my workout between 4:30 and 5:00. It makes a huge difference when it comes to running long distances without stopping because you have energy from the food, but not a super full stomach.

2. Drink a lot of water. I never used to drink water, maybe a glass before bed sometimes but that was it. Now I drink at least 48oz a day. I bought this cute water bottle from target that holds 24oz. I don't drink soda anymore (at least at work), so I just make sure to drink 2 of these throughout the day.

3. Write in a food journal. It sounds really stupid and OCD, but it has helped me watch what I eat. And if I eat something not so good (like nachos...ahem..like every time I'm with Emily), I am more motivated the next day when I work out to make up for it.

4. And lastly, the book is helpful, however some of the exercises are really tough. If there is something I can't do, I try to modify it in a way to my fitness level. And I wish I would have known that some of the exercises that I am supposed to perform require weight and cable machines. I wanted to do this 30 day plan at home, but it is proving to be quite difficult.

Anyway, I am just getting the hang of this blogging thing. This blog is going to be a record of every day things I think about, so the sky is the limit I guess. I hope it doesn't bore anyone too much! See you next time...

And to leave you a quote from the Duchess herself:
I have a habit of starting projects and not finishing them, so we'll see how this goes. I am not a newlywed, new mom, an expert in anything, and I am not currently embarking on a new adventure. I am simply looking for a place to post anything and everything. I am a movie and television show critic, a fashion enthusiast, a celebrity gossiper, a scientist (geek-alert), an animal lover, and a rambler. Expect this blog to be a potpourri of topics. Anything that is on my mind is a potential entry.

With that said, I welcome you to my blog. I hope you enjoy my sarcasm and nerdiness. More interesting entries to follow--I am currently more concerned with the layout and theme of this blog (<---easily distracted).

And to end, the my favorite quote and the inspiration for the name of this blog:

"Life seems but a quick succession of busy nothings."
